5 Funny  Chinese -English Fails ~

    Don't Say That!

    You've been practicing Chinese hard.

    You know your tones.

    You survived HSK 3.

But then someone looks at you strangely when you speaking?

    Oops. That's a Chinese-English fail.

    Let's face it:

    direct translation doesn't always work

Here are 5 classic Chinglish mistakes that sound fine in Chinese...

but come off way too honest in English

    × You are fat now

√ “You look healthy!” or “You've gained some energy!”

In Chinese, “你胖了” can be an affectionate comment.

In English? It's a one-way ticket to friendship destruction .

    ×  How old are you?

√“If you don't mind me asking… how old are you?”

Asking age is common in Chinese intros.

But in English, it needs a polite intro — especially with adults!

× You should wear  more clothes

√“It's a bit cold today — are you warm enough?”

Chinese moms say this out of love

In English, telling someone what to wear can sound bossy unless softened.

×  Do you have  boyfriend/ girlfriend?

√ “Are you seeing anyone these days?” or “Do you have a partner?”

A totally normal question in China.

In English, context is everything — timing, tone, and phrasing matter!

    ×  I will give you a lesson

√“Let me walk you through it” or “I can show you how.”

    In Chinese, “给你上课” sounds helpful.

In English, it can sound like you're about to lecture someone

    Why does this happen

    Because

    languages carry different cultures.

    Chinese tends to be

direct in wording but indirect in intent.

    English often does the opposite

    — indirect wording for polite delivery.
